A fully custom website built on Joomla – more than a decade ago was slowing down with every passing year. Daily updates, blog posts, and incremental tweaks gradually aged the architecture, leading to performance issues, broken integrations, and a design that no longer supported modern devices or screen sizes.
By putting architecture first and design second, and rebuilding around an easy-to-use CMS, we addressed the core problems at their root. The result was a fast, reliable, and simple-to-manage website that the UMCA team continues to use and maintain with confidence to this day.
The challenge started with a simple request – Joomla had become difficult to use and increasingly unfriendly for non-technical users. UMCA needed a platform their internal team could update confidently without constant back-and-forth with a development team.
But the problem ran deeper. Primary, Secondary, and High School each had different curriculums, forms, faculty, and departments. Updates could happen at any moment, and the website had to reflect those changes instantly. This meant avoiding rigid, custom-coded sections altogether. Any area where content might change needed to be fully manageable through the CMS, without developer intervention.
The discovery phase focused on identifying every area where content might change, whether that was text, images, or forms. Understanding these touchpoints early ensured the site could adapt to frequent updates without friction.
Next came the information architecture. Making everything easy to find and logically placed created a far simpler experience for parents, faculty, and administrators using the site daily.
An Elementor-based build removed the need for custom code entirely. With no hard-coded sections, the UMCA team could confidently manage updates from the backend without relying on developers.
Finally, a clean visual design paired with a solid architecture significantly improved site performance, eliminating long load times and ensuring pages loaded quickly instead of forcing users to wait up to ten seconds.
